Nutrition in Sebastopol, CA

with and Dr. Laura Polak, D.C.

Nutrition is the science of food, the nutrients in foods and how the body uses those nutrients. It includes the process of ingestion, digestion, absorption, metabolism, transport, storage and excretion of those nutrients. It also includes the environmental, psychological and behavioral aspects of food and eating. The six classes of nutrients include: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water.

Good nutrition means getting the right amount of nutrients from healthy foods in the right combinations. Having nutrition knowledge and making smart choices about the foods you eat can and will help you achieve optimum health over your lifetime, and be a key to avoiding obesity, illness, and many of today’s most prevalent chronic diseases.

Dr. Laura's Nutrition Philosophy

In addition to Dr. Laura’s chiropractic training where she studied organic chemistry, biochemistry and nutrition Dr. Laura polak has finished 100 hours in Applied Kinesiology, most people know as “muscle testing”, received a certificate in nutrition response testing, NRT, and has taken many courses in pharmaceutical nutritional supplements and herbs.

Because of the many different diets and styles of eating out there, Dr. Laura has come to honor and respect that each and everybody has an optimum way of utilizing his or her food. There is no one diet that is best for any individual. We are constantly evolving in our relationship and bio-chemistry thorough our lives. For instance; at one point a woman in her early 20s may need to eat red meat to assist in an iron deficient anemia during her cycle. But that same woman in her late 50s may thrive on a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Dr. Laura specializes in helping you understand the chemical changes that can occur by our hormones, digestion and assimilation of foods and interactions with the body.

She provides assistance in foods and medicines in every form.

Dr. Bridget’s Nutritional Philosophy

Food can be our best medicine.  Healthy nutrition isn’t just about receiving the right combination of macro and micronutrients.  It is also about finding the foods that are most digestible and absorbable for your unique biology, and the right flavors and temperatures for your individual constitution.

Food is also very emotional.  Having a sense of enjoyment in our food is essential to feeling nourished and can greatly influence one’s sense of well-being.   At the same time, having discernment in our diets can be crucial to addressing health conditions and for maintaining good health.

When people are habituated into a diet of over-processed and chemically altered foods, this can lead to a distorted sense of what foods are truly healthy, resulting in addictive patterns around food, malnourishment, weight issues, and a host of chronic illnesses.  On the other hand, when people are overly discerning about their diets, this can lead to excessive restriction, anxiety about obtaining healthy foods, and social isolation, all of which can lead to undernourishment and undue emotional distress.  Either extreme can have negative health consequences.

Dr. Bridget’s philosophy is to help each person find the right balance.  Drawing from Western nutritional science and Ayurvedic medicine, Dr. Bridget provides nutritional recommendations based on each individual’s unique health picture.  She incorporates diagnostic tools such as micronutrient assessment, digestive analysis, and food sensitivity testing when appropriate.  She addresses digestive dysfunction, gut flora issues, emotional eating, and food addictions, all of which can influence one’s ability to make healthy choices.  Dr. Bridget will work with you to develop eating habits that not only maximize your health, but also that enhance your enjoyment of food.
